Winter
Ninth Pass
Winter, Turn 2511
Months 1-3

A drought has lasted for more than a Turn in the Fortian region. Although cold, the weather remains dry, with very little snowfall. The water-level in the lake is low, and the lower caverns are now rationing non-essential water (for bathing, laundry, et cetera).

Announcements / Spring is coming!

Just a heads up that IC Spring will be starting on Saturday, June 22nd.  If you're still RPing events from Summer and Autumn, please start wrapping those up. :)

Chit-Chat / Would you chat RP?
« on: June 06, 2013, 04:18:39 PM »
Just curious.  There's software to make it possible to host our own chatroom, and I was wondering if people would be interested in having one available for RP.

It would probably function more like IRC (separate rooms/channels) than a shoutbox, so each RP could have its own separate space rather than all mashed together, and then you could post your chat session to the forum afterward for posterity.

Let me know. :)

Isobel and Rholana are off chilling on a Southern Beach in an open thread, if you do want to hit up two of your wingmates.  We're only a few rounds in: http://www.thepernese.com/index.php?topic=1278.0

And, of course, we just sent Luka off to the netherworld Southern Weyr, so if you want to demand answers from leadership, T'raev is taggable any time.

You'll want to take care of a few things now.  First, go to the Face Claim post and post your played-by/face claim.  If this is a dragonrider character, you can also add your dragon to the dragon size chart.

You'll also probably want to go to the Plotting forum to rummage around for threads.  You can also introduce your self over at the Introductions thread.

And, of course, join the roleplay!  You may want to join Thread Roulette if you're looking for a quick way to get random threads, or join any of the open threads listed under "Roleplay" at the top of the index page of the forum.

Just as a quick follow-up - Chaoslilfury is going to step into the role of the Public Relations Staffer.  The position of Plot Staffer is still open.

Announcements / Now Hiring - Two Staff Positions
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:59:35 AM »
So, we're looking for two more staff members to join the fray.  There are a couple of fairly specific guidelines for these positions, so please be sure you read the info below before tossing your name into the hat:

Plot Staffer -
• Update and maintain Thread Roulette, The Big Search Thread, and The Flight Reservation Thread.
• Promote (bump and shoutbox-mention) things of interest in the Plotting forum and its sub-forums.
• Move old plotting topics into the archives.
• Moderate the Plotting forum and its sub-forums (including gossip and rumors) as needed.
• Lock all RP threads that have not had a reply in more than a month.
• Add any open RP to the Open Roleplay listing (in case people forget to do so).

Public Relations Staffer -
• Ensure all new characters are reviewed within 24 hours.
• Move all unfinished applications to the appropriate sub-forum.
• Ensure the Wing Rosters, Face Claim, Dragon Size Chart, Hatching Records, and the Census portal block are up-to-date.
• Moderate the shoutbox and the Chit-Chat and Absences forums.
• Follow any advertisements posted to our ad board to be sure our ad is posted back accordingly, and move relevant ads to the Linked Back subforum.

General Requirements - (Requirements for both of the above positions.)
• "Check-in" on a daily basis (except when AFK - vacation, sick, whatever).
• Post in character at least 3 times per week (every-other-day).
• Maintain a pleasant, semi-professional demeanor when dealing with staff issues.
• Assist with game-wide plots and Hatchings as needed.
• Review pending applications and process approvals of new characters.

You are not required to have an IC ranking character on the board, but you must have been a member of the site for at least two months.

If you're still interested in applying (whew), please send a PM to Oracle with your interest.  Applications will remain open until the positions are filled. :)

Gossip & Rumors / Re: The cupboards are bare?
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:02:54 AM »
And it's apparently not just Fort Weyr.

Relations between Fort and High Reaches have been rather cool for a while - since the goldrider Maeyi was unceremoniously shipped back to her home-Weyr and Fort brought in yet another Istan to become Senior Weyrwoman - so it's no wonder that the rumors about the High Reaches tithes were a little slow in coming.  And apparently Telgar, too.

With the drought stretching north and east beyond Ruatha and Nabol, Fort Weyr isn't the only one feeling the pinch now that winter has settled in earnest.  Of course, Fort is the only one getting bumps of crops from the Southern Continent, which probably doesn't make the Reaches and Telgar feel any better...

Plotting / Re: Threads with the Weyrleader

Hmm.

First few introductions would probably have been pretty much - "New Harper?  Awesome.  Go talk to Y'vin about what he wants you to do."

'Cause that's T'raev in a nutshell.  But I think we could maybe pitch the idea that he at least asks her to go sit in on this Conclave?  Even if the thread itself is off-camera?

Plotting / Re: Anyone up for a Search?
« on: May 02, 2013, 11:53:49 AM »
Hmmmm.  T'raev is always keen on meeting people who are Useful in some way.  The other dudes I play... are less easy to befriend.  But either Kh'mic or T'raev can Search if no one nabs that.

Isobel can also be a chore, but if you want a frienemy, she's a good go-to!

Cayris would probably be the one most likely to make friends, and even that might be more like "at least until there's a massive back-stabbing."

But holla if you want threads. :D

Plotting / Weyrling Training - Next three months
« on: May 02, 2013, 11:39:49 AM »
Just as a head's up for the weyrlings, here's what's up-and-coming in Winter:

Age: 4 months / end of Month 1 - Unmanned flying
About four months old, most dragons are capable of sustaining their own weight.  This begins with short glides and flights, and culminates in full, unmanned flying.  Because dragonets can now fly, if only for short distances, they are also now capable of hunting for their own food.  Time previously spent on chopping meat can now be devoted to creating a set of flying straps and studying wing formations and Threadfall charts.

Age: 5 months / end of Month 2 - Manned flying
After about a month of practice without their riders, with about a month spent perfecting their first set of straps, dragonets and weyrlings are ready to fly together.  Short flights within the confines of the bowl help new weyrlings acclimate to the thrill of flying.

Age: 6 months / end of month 3 - Weyr assignment and formation drills
Capable of flying on their own, weyrlings move out of the barracks and into their own weyrs.  The transition phase marks the end of "junior" weyrlinghood, and weyrlings are now considered senior weyrlings.  They begin intensive study and practice of formations with the rest of the weyrling Wing in preparation for joining Threadfall as a resupply Wing.

Any of these y'all would like to have on-camera for this RL month?

Announcements / Winter - Turn 2511
« on: May 02, 2013, 07:09:55 AM »
Usually, by Turn's End, the Fort region sees snow-capped mountains in the distance and a blend of snow and sleet chasing the end of a rainy autumn.  But this Turn has definitely been different.  While the highest peaks have their snowy dusting, most of the region wants for any decent accumulation of precipitation, whether snowfall or rain.  The unseasonably warm autumn weather blends almost seamlessly into an uncannily dry winter.

The first few days of the Turn cling to that uncommon warmth, and then the winds pick up for two days straight, blowing like they never mean to stop.  Dirt and dust paint the skies a shade of brownish-gray that is, frankly, gross.  But all that blowing doesn't bring rain, only a change in temperature, with the weather going from unseasonably warm to crisp and cold all but overnight.  One morning, the Weyr awakens to a hard, cold frost on the ground.  The air is frigid and the winds, which persist lightly over the next few days, are biting and bitter.  But no rain is coming, nor snow, nor any relief from the drought.  The winter remains cold and dry, with only a few pathetic snowstorms during months usually heavy with precipitation.

As the winter unfolds, even things at the Weyr begin to change a bit.  The water level in the lake has gone down steadily, and it's now actually noticeable.  The high-water mark is more than a dragon-length from the current shoreline, and the lake feels more like a glorified pond.  Most of the adult dragons and riders are fortunate enough to be able to bathe themselves elsewhere - lakes and ponds outside the Weyr - but the weyrling dragonets are stuck using this cool, silty water.  Water in the lower caverns is also starting to be more closely monitored, with Jilenna's staff reducing the days the water in the bathing pools is refreshed to only every-other-day, which tends to congest the bathing caverns on the "clean" days.  The kitchens don't seem to be feeling it - yet - and drinking water hasn't been rationed - yet - but the laundry gets backed up, the bathing caverns, and the latrines begin to smell by the time winter reaches its close.

Stay tuned to the Plots & Rumors for updates about events throughout the winter as the drought continues to take its toll on Fort Weyr.
