Ninth Pass Winter, Turn 2511 Months 1-3
A drought has lasted for more than a Turn in the Fortian region. Although cold, the weather remains dry, with very little snowfall. The water-level in the lake is low, and the lower caverns are now rationing non-essential water (for bathing, laundry, et cetera).

Bowl
From the northeast end of the bowl - where the Hatching grounds are found - to the southwest - where the lake and feeding grounds are located - the bowl is approximately a mile long and half a mile wide. Most of the ground is scoured clean of greenery, just the small blot of plant-life for the kitchen garden near the entrance to the inner caverns, and the haze of grass for the few acres of the feeding grounds. The hard surface is dusted over with snow or frost in the winter, but is otherwise unyielding, bland dirt hardened to near stone-strength from eons of baking in the sunlight.

Caverns
Some two thousand people call the lower caverns of Fort their place of residence, both for living and working. The main entrance is through a wide tunnel on the eastern wall of the bowl, leading directly into the living cavern, but a few smaller entrances are found here and there - one for the infirmary, for the kitchens, for the road leading to the tunnel to the Hold. In ages past, the walls were carved smooth and often dressed elaborately with columns and archways, so that only the newest, deepest caverns are still rough. Storerooms, workrooms, bathing caverns, privies, and countless other caverns of various functions are found somewhere in the labyrinth of the inner Weyr.

Skies
The skies over Fort Weyr are rarely empty. Some dragon or rider is always coming or going, gliding off of a weyr ledge, spiraling down to a landing in the bowl, participating in one of the near-daily greenflights or the rarer goldflights. All of these doings are presided over by the Star Stones, which thrust up as a high, flat ledge at the northeastern end of the bowl, casting their shadow on the Hatching Grounds. Here, the watchdragon bugles his challenge to all that come and go from the skies of Fort Weyr.

The Protectorate
The Fort Weyr coverage region stretches from Ruatha Hold to Southern Boll Hold, comprising the entirety of the Fortian peninsula. The Weyr itself is largely central to this region, a little farther north than the true midpoint but fairly close. Only a few hours' ride south is Fort Hold, while a further several days south leads to Southern Boll Hold, and almost as far north leads to Ruatha Hold.

The Southern Continent
The Southern Continent is massive - and largely empty and unexplored. The inhabited region consists of a narrow headland due south of Ista, where a Weyr and Hold have sprung up on the fringe of a massive jungle. Only a few miles from each other, the Weyr and Hold intermingle frequently, sharing a common interest: survival. Much of the area's farming is done in a narrow strip of land south of the jungle, at the base of foothills that mark the end of Southern Weyr's protectorate. Sections of the jungle have been cleared as well, with groves interspersed among the native foliage. The residents of the Southern Continent live in cottages and huts rather than stone-and-metal holds, and even the dragonriders have forsaken cave-dwelling.
